Dear Betty Ann -- Terrific! That's two jabots so far. If we can manage to inspire seven more of us, we'll be good to go. It never occurred to me in the long-ago past that I could ever influence nine Supreme Court justices, but here we are! Is anybody listening?

Two is really all that's needed :)

Ever since Aurelia mentioned the project -- some years ago, when Sandra Day O'Connor was still on the court (now, *she* was a lovely lady to wear lace with grace) -- I've been observing our Super-Supremes' garb and reading about them whenever I could. There was another photo in Thursday's NYTimes (unfortunately, not in the online edition of the article; I checked), of the entire gathering, including, for the first time, Sonia Sotomayor.

Sotomayor is, obviously, a prime target for a nice lace gift (and I bet the lacemakers in Puerto Rico are thinking about making her something too). She seems to like lace and wears it with relish. Ginsburg is another good target -- that crude crocheted collar she's been wearing for years has been getting on my nerves. I was happy to see her wear, for a change, a (makeshift, a la O'Connor) "jabot" in that photo on Thursday; maybe Sotomayor lent her one of hers :)

The gentlemen... Stevens (likely to retire once this session -- starting on Monday -- is over, according to the rumours. So we'd need to hustle) is a possibility, but not for a jabot; bow-ties are all he ever wears and he has a big and varied collection (but none in lace, so far as I saw). Roberts, Breyer, Kennedy and Alito always wear robes with "deep necklines", showing off the very traditional ties; not very suitable for a jabot. Thomas seems to have two robes -- sometimes, he wears one close enough to the neck to support a jabot, sometimes one with a "deep neckline" and visible tie. Scalia is the only one who, consistently, wears a robe with a close to the face neckline (a bit like a cardinal's robe, but black) and could wear a jabot with it. But, even there, the tie is peeeking.

The Wikipedia entry has nice pictures of each of them (and, glory be! Ginsburg is *not* wearing that tatty collar of hers <g>)
