I used to teach some aspects of consumer law and the chains sometimes use a perfectly legal ploy to get round the "We'll match the price" promise. Some manufacturers of appliances agree to put a different model number on appliances for different chains. So you see what looks to you exactly the same model cheaper in one chain than another, but the dearer chain won't match the price because they say it's a different model.

It happens less than it did because of consumer forums and because manufacturers are often happy to provide manuals or communicate with customers via the web.
