Can you describe the fastenings. I've googled and they seem to fasten them
in a variety of ways - magnetic clasp, sprung ring necklace clasps, a braid
with a knot on the end passed through a loop, a button on one end and a loop
on the other, tying the ends together.
Or there's one where you pull the ends through a bead in opposite directions
and it holds. I suspect the hole through the middle doesn't go straight
through, but is angled towards the centre and then angled the other way from
the centre to the other side so that there's a bend in the hole. Pulling it
tight will make it hold, pulling it loosely will allow the cord to slide. As
a child I had a box of magic tricks with a siding block on a string. You
held the string vertically and when you slackened it, the block slid down
the string, when you pulled it taught the block stopped because it was held
by the bend in the hole through the block.
