Gosh! Over here "Down under," we can use the self-serve if we wish, but at the 'normal" checkouts, the shop assistant packs the bags as she scans the items. We take our own bags, and hand them to her, and she fills them. We ask for meat to be put in a plastic bag rather than in our fabric bag, in case it leaks, and we like the bread in one too, so it does not get crumpled up! Not a problem.
In Aldi we have to take our own bags, and pack ourselves, but not in other supermarkets ( -- well, Not in Melbourne anyway.
