Actually, that makes perfect sense: we used to have a
future, it has been stolen, we want it back.
I feel rather that way: In a Booth Tarkington story (I've
forgotten the title; might be "The Plutocrat"; anyhow, it's
the one that coined or popularized "throwing money at a
problem"), one of the characters explains that the U.S.A. is
destined to be a new Rome because of its innovation,
freedom, and industrial might -- but in the non-fictional
world, our leaders tossed all that into the garbage in inept
pursuit of the now-futile 19th-Century military path to
conquest, and now we're a third-world country with enough
leftovers that we haven't quite realized it yet.
