I have moved this over from the main list because it isn't lace-related. Just wanted to say that there is a map of left- and right- driving countries here: http://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/list-of-left-driving-countries/ I was surprised to learn that 35% of the world is left-driving; I had thought the percentage was lower, and looking at the map it is a lot less than 35% of the land area - I suppose they mean 35% of the cars in the world are in left-driving countries.
They also have a page detailing the right versus left driving history of the world. It is fascinating! Driving on the left was the original method, and originated basically because we are mostly a right-handed race so we want to stand safely on the shoulder of the road to mount our horses, and we want our swords - worn on the left side of the body - to not be whacked by people riding by. The reasons why we changed are really interesting. The left-and-right driving history page is at http://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/driving-on-the-left/ Adele West Vancouver, BC (west coast of Canada) > England isn't the only country that drives on the left. Japan is another > place, and Malta as well as the US Virgin Islands and there are others. > ------- Original message -------- > From: [email protected] > Date:23/04/2014 13:23 (GMT+00:00) > To: [email protected], [email protected] > Subject: Re: [lace] Footside on left > > I think it is the same reason why the English drive on the left, while > everyone else drives on the right. But, I don't know what that reason is. > Devon To unsubscribe send email to [email protected] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [email protected]. For help, write to [email protected].
