I received this from one of my sisters in the Netherlands, and translated it into English. In the Netherlands, you pay a deposit on glass bottles (wine, beer etc.) which you get back when the empties are returned to the shop.

Investing in shares?

If you bought €1000 of shares in KPN in Jan 2006, you will now have €45 left. If you bought €1000 of shares in Versatel in Jan 2006, you will now have €36 left. If you bought €1000 of shares in UPC in Jan 2006, you will now have €18 left. If you bought €1000 of shares in Ahold in Jan 2006, you will now have €100 left.

If, however, last year you spent €1000 on bottled beer, and in other words drank €1000 of beer,
you will now have €390 in deposit money to come back.
So, sitting in an easy chair, watching TV all day, drinking beer, gives you a better return than shares!

Cheers!
