I'd suggest making up some Tang but with less water, but that's going to be pretty sweet and sugary and completely change the balance of the recipe.
I agree with the apple sauce idea - and you could always throw in a little dash of Grand Marnier or Triple Sec or just more of the zest from an orange. We do have unsweetened applesauce here in the US, so hopefully you could find some there too or even make your own. The cake sounds tasty - hope it turns out OK if he goes ahead and makes it.
