Angela replies:

These are not bobbins as such, but they are Pirns which are weaving thread
holders. The weaving thread is wound onto the Pirn which is temporarily
slotted onto a thread winder. When full the Pirn is inserted into the Boat
Shuttle with one thread end protruding from a hole in the shuttle so that
when the shuttle is thrown across the weft slot, the Pirn revolves and the
thread unwinds itself. The weaving girls used to blow the thread through
the hole in the shuttle, thus being called Kissing Shuttles, but this could
lead to cross-infection of germs and was stopped.
