I had a wonderful time at the conference; thank you Esther, Bev, and
everyone who worked so hard to make our four days so much fun. The food
was good, the weather mostly cooperative, and the "lawn bunnies" adorable.
Julie - I'm still working on my Bucks class piece, but I'm 3/4 finished
and will send you a picture when it's done. Thanks for a wonderful class.

Now for the warning: I checked my bank account yesterday evening to get
the converted dollar amounts from the trip and discovered that someone had
stolen my credit card number and run up almost $2000 in charges! I only
used my card in two places - the University of Victoria (to pay for my
room), and Recollections Antique Mall in downtown Victoria, later last
week. Both receipts show the entire credit card number - no digits
starred out - so someone was able to copy the number and use it to buy
large gift certificates on the web. I will get my money back and
hopefully Visa will catch the culprit, but I'm afraid I might not be the
only victim. The teller's guess is that a student may have taken the
number to use himself, or sold it to someone else.

Please, please everyone check your accounts if you used a credit card at
the university and make sure that no additional charges have been
recorded. If the worst has happened and you did get hit, please report it
immediately, even if it's a small amount. One of the charges on my card
was for less that $5, to a company in Tel Aviv. The more information we
can provide, the better the chances are that the crook will be caught and
punished.

I've since been told that any time a credit card is used we should check
the receipt to see if the complete account number is printed on it before
signing (most machines "star" out all but the last 4 digits). If the
whole number is printed, scribble it out *on both copies* so the number
can't be read. They've already recorded the transaction, so there's no
need to leave the number legible on either copy.

I hope mine was the only incident, but I'd feel really awful if I didn't
warn the other attendees. I'm just glad I was checking my account
frequently after the trip; no telling how much damage they could have done
if I'd have ignored it until the statement came at the end of the month.

I did buy three more antique/old tatting shuttles - all plastic - in
different sizes during my shopping. Now I just need to pick up Hindi's
book so I can start cataloging my collection. :-)

Back to lacing,

LeAnn in sunny (at least for today) Oregon
