Dear Lacemakers, This is for lacemakers who are designing laces to be framed.
A friend of mine who does her own framing always finds the frame and mat before making the lace. Sometimes, a slight change in scale/size makes the difference in finding a ready-made (less expensive) frame vs. a custom-made (expensive) frame. For an octagon shape - I was once fortunate to find a very beautiful small mirror in an octagon frame in a department store. By removing the mirror and replacing it with glass, and with adjustments made in cutting a mat, the result was a beautiful presentation at reasonable cost. Conservation tips: Remember that if you use glass to protect a piece of valuable lace, it should be raised away from the lace, not touching it. This is done with a mat or special spacers that can be bought where framing materials are sold. I especially like mats that are clad in silk, so the whole piece has a textile appearance. Avoid framing/mat kits sold in craft stores that are not made of acid-free materials. Off-gasing from wood pulp products and adhesives are to be avoided.
