At one time there were two totally different types and sizes of video tapes in the UK - VHS and Betamax. Both used PAL, but as apart from other considerations, the tapes wouldn't physically fit in the other machine. Some tapes were produced to fit both machines, but eventually Betamax lost out. You'd be hard-pressed to find Betamax tapes now, but there are a few diehards who still use it so that's why Springett's say that al videos are in VHS format.
