I've seen these pillows with several different shaped bobbins - and these are consistent with some of my sightings. I'm wondering if the pillows and bobbins were made (probably under licence) in different places, and therefore the bobbins differed a little according to the maker.
For instant, these pillows were sold in Australia by a Melbourne-based company, and I find it hard to believe that they were made in America and shipped over here - the selling price would've had to have been more to cover the shipping costs. Also the material covering the board differs from time to time too - mine (for which I have all the original books, patterns, bobbins and purchase receipt!) was covered in plain green felt, rather like the felt used on billiard tables.
