Eva very kindly translated the main headings from Ulrike's 400 tricks books for me, and we were a bit worried that we might be infringing copyright if this was shared with the list. But, after sharing these thoughts with Avital, we don't think so because:
1. It's only the main headings that are being translated and not the whole book. 2. The translations are no good without the book. 3. Having the headings might encourage people to buy the book who would be put off without them, and it might result in more sales for Ulrike. 4. Neither Eva nor I are profiting from it, but Ulrike could. 5. There isn't an existing translation. 6. It's less than 10% of the book and I would say it could be classed as for educational/research purposes. So here it is: Lacemaking - Handbook with 400 tricks and ????????? KNIFF is a lovely word and not really translateable - it is another word for trick, but with the idea of contriving to do something. The word comes from KNEIFEN which means to pinch - and a Kniff can also be a fold. German is a very poor language and one word has to do for many things! Leinenschlag und Bander = Cloth stitch (linenstitch) and ?????????? Yes, Leinen =linen, Schlag = stitch the famous controversy of cloth or whole stitch! Germans usually use CTC = cloth stitch or linen stitch, and two half stitches, CTCT for whole stitch, or, in our method, on our pillow, TCTC. The a, o, or u can have two little dots above them, - umlauts - which change the sound, and the meaning of the word. The English transcription is ae, oe, or ue, my father legally changed our name, Schafer with the diaeresis to ae because of his international business correspondence. Now, some computers will not read them, but make a mess of the whole text. All this leads to Baender!!!! Baender, plural of Band = tape. Some use the word Bandspitze, others Baenderspitze for tapelace. Baender = tapes 1.1 Allgemeines = general information 1.2 Rander Rand = border, Raender = borders, also edgings. 1.3 Kurven und Ecken = Curves and ????????? corners 2. Probleme im Netzschlag Problems in Halfstitch. Netz means net, when halfstitch is used throughout, such as in a motive, it is called Netzschlag. Believe me, english is a much more practical language!!!!! 3. Die Kunst der Formschlage Kunst = art. Schlag = stitch, Schlaege = stitches ( If I wanted to really confuse you, I would tell you, that Schlaege also means a beating!) BUT Schlag means stitch only in lacemaking, in crocheting, knitting or sewing, there are different words! Formschlag is the east German name for leaves or tallies - since that is the region that has a continuous tradition of making lace, many of their words are now in use. 4. Flechter und Vervandte = Braids and Plaits (pure guess) Well, yes. Ulrike plays with words, Verwandte are relatives, uncles, aunts and such, so there you have braids and anything related to them. Most of us fight about what is a plait and what is a braid, anyway! 5. Verbindungen fur alle falle In lace, I have always called Verbindungen unions - Bridget Cook speaks of crossings - three pair crossings, four pair crossings etc. , so crossings would be more accurate in English. fuer alle Faelle is again a play on words, for any case would be the literal translation. 5.1 Verbindungen von Einzelparren crossings of seperate (single) pairs 5.2 Verbindugen von Flechtern crossings of braids 5.2.17/5.2.21 Mehrpaarige Vebindungen crossings of many pairs NOTE 5.2.22 das einzelne Arbeitspaar gut drehen = twist the single worker pair well 5.3 Verbindungen von Einzelpaaren mit Flechtern crossings of single pairs with braids 5.4 Unregelmassige Verbindungen irregular crossings 5.5 Verbindungen mit Venezianischen Flechtern crossings with the Venetian Plait the Venetian Plait is under 4.9 - it is one of the relatives! 6. Grunde und ihre kleinen Kniffe = Ground and ?????????????????? grounds and their small tricks 7. Verzierungen Decorations 7.1 Picots = picots 7.2 Konturfaden gimp Now I have a question - is a gimp always a gimp? I better explain - there are two words for gimp in german, or spanish, for that matter. One is Zierfaden, when it is used for decoration, or, as in this case, Konturfaden, when it is used to outline a form, a leaf or flower, or such. A Zierfaden does not necessarily have to be a thicker thread, it can be another colour, but an outlining thread would always be thicker. 7.3 Locher Loch - hole, Loecher - holes 7.4 Spinnen = spiders? yes 7.5 Perlen und Ringe = beads and ?????????? beads (or pearls) and rings 7.6 Troddeln und Frasen = ??????? and fringes tassels and fringes 7.7 Farbe = colour? yes 7.8 Rahmen und Stabe frames and ----- a Stab is a stick, in this case I think dowel would be more accurate, although I have seen some modern pieces made unto and with sticks straight from mother nature 8.
