I've finally gotten around to looking at the pattern. Passing thread behind might save a tying-off or two -- but a red ball thread would be hard to hide behind a white ring. PTB went out of style when the chain was invented but, like false tatting (now enjoying new life in the form of split rings and split chains), it still has its uses. One simply passes the thread behind a ring and joins to a picot at the point where one wishes to resume tatting. The trick lies in leaving exactly the right amount of thread.
