Dear Friends,
It has been mentioned to me (I think in a private email) that a glue made
of flour and water will suffice in some climates to stick and at the same
time stiffen. This is quite true.
However, I always use Granny's old trick when making up such a glue, and
that is to add a spoonful of methylated spirits to the mixture. This makes
it last and last without going mouldy. Granny used this from about 1900,
particularly when making her magnificent papier mache trays and table tops.
I also knew a woman in Darwin, Northern Territory of Chinese descent who
told me her mother simply used the water in which she had boiled the rice.
They would also use one grain of boiled rice for sticking their stamps into
their albums.
