Hi everyone, Now that I am getting back to doing normal things after convention and having read through the 14 digests on lace and chat that happened whilst I was away, boy you guys kept busy, I asked Lori Howe to put my winning entry for the competition on her Gallery web site of some of my work. http://lace.lacefairy.com/Gallery/JaniceBlair.html This year there was a definite "competition", many lovely entries in the original category and only two in the technical section, one of which was by Ken and I told him on Friday that he would definitely win a prize in that category. On his way back to the table after collecting his winnings he said "you were right!". I was holding my breath this year (after all I had seen Tamara's love birds) and I was truly surprised when they gave the awards. Previous years they were in reverse order so it threw me for a second when Barbara read my name first. I also almost missed the announcement for Popular Vote as I was back at my table and the mask was being passed around. I was watching carefully that the ribbons didn't end up in the strawberry sauce on the dessert plates and not really listening at that stage. I did hear that Tamara had got second prize but after that I missed the other announcements. Who came third? Was it the Limerick Statue of Liberty with fireworks. Guess I will have to wait for the Bulletin to come out. Convention started out badly, first I found I was $60 short in my cash stash. My fault for not transferring it to my purse instead of leaving it hidden under my lace rose corsage in a box in the bedroom drawer. Then my roommate lost a ring (made by her DH) outside the sales room just before the stampede when they opened the doors for the first time. Luckily it turned up at the catered breakfast. It had flown into a handbag and into a spectacle case and was found finally when the owner tried to put her specs away. Things were good in my classes though. I finally met Lenka in the Wire Angel class and learnt how to make lace with wire. My angel is almost finished, just needs the final beading. She and her DH are wonderful people and her wire lace is even better up close. My other class was with Jana Novak where I learnt invisible endings and other techniques. She is also a very nice person to have as a teacher and we had some fun in the class. If you are planning to have a convention make sure to invite both these fantastic teachers. Forgot to mention the mask is about 11 inches high and 10 inches wide and I made it in Brok 100/3 cotton with Coats Ophir gold thread and 28 guage wire in the feathers. The pattern will be in the IOLI Bulletin sometime in the next year if Debra thinks there is a demand. I hope the Lovebirds by Tamara will be in the next one as it does make a beautiful wedding gift. It probably only needs a little tweaking and it would be appropriate for next years competition, which, as it is in Pennsylvania, the theme is Hex signs. I have one very similar to that design in my garage except it only has one bird. Time to make tea so I will send this long email off to you all and thanks to anyone who voted for my design at convention.
