Having been thinking about it during the day is an 'inverter' what we'd call a 'transformer'? It transforms mains voltage of 220 volts down to lower voltages like (for instance) the 9 volts you get from a battery. So my laptop will either run from a battery or from the mains with a transformer in the cable.
