Robin and the spiders, This has set me thinking about William Morris and the 'Arts and Crafts Movement' - here was a man who felt that a part of your soul was included in crafts and raised the belief in them as an artform to probably the highest it has ever been.
Earlier this year, I went my parents to Standen which was furnished in the Arts and Crafts style. There are some of the most fantastic examples of needlework there, from the period, done by the women of the house. During the winter time when it was too cold to go out, the ladies and sometimes the gents, would site and embrodier, quilt and whatever took their fancy and create beautiful things to be in their house. This pastime was seen as an essential thing to do if one was to understand and live within the ethos of the movement. You have to bear in mind that the family who owned this house were not artisans, they were not connected to Morris, they were middle class money who wanted to be in touch with the ideals that they supported. I find that rather radical for the time!
