I recall once that I forgot my lacemaking table for a class and Maria 
Provencher suggested I keep the pillow in my lap and elevate my feet on a
stool, holding the pillow in the lap. She claimed that this was the way that
it was always done in Belgium and that you could work for hours without your

I have a lacemaker's stool for just that purpose.  Yes, it's genuinely a
lacemaker's stool, made by a lacemaker's husband for lacemakers.  But the
stool is only about 4 inches (10 cm) high at the front, 5 in (12/13 cm) at
the back), just enough for an average-height person to get her upper legs
horizontal when sitting in an average-height chair.  A 9-inch stool would
put your upper legs decidedly sloping upward, which I would find very
uncomfortable unless the chair had good back support (unless, of course, the
chair seat was about 5 inches higher than the average chair).
