The country of origin of Point de Venise a reseau is something of a mystery.
Levey thinks it is Brussels needle lace. Earnshaw thinks it was made in Venice
or Burano. She also comments that there is a "marked similarity between the
overall appearance of reseau Venise and of point de Sedan, though the texture
is quite different." But point de Sedan is a bit of mystery in itself. Palliser
said in her first book that Point de Venise a reseau came from Brussels.
Jourdain corrected that in the Dover published edition to say Venice. Gwynne plays
it safe saying that "The geometiric features could lead one to believee that
this is a Venetian lace; however, according to one late C20 school of thougth
this is an early Brussels lace."
Do my fellow Arachnids have an opinion on this? If you had the resources of a
lace collection of 5,000 pieces what would you look at to try to get to the
bottom of this mystery?
