I think that is a good idea of yours regarding a letter to the Lace Guild, I'll get one off today, while I still have the library book to hand and quote them chapter and verse ( or at least page and note!) That way it will also reach some modern Honiton workers as we don't seem to have any on Arachne.
Jean, I agree that it would be wonderful to have the Queens lace on display. HM the Queen Mother was always generous with loaning some of her lace, I saw several exhibition at the Bowes Museum which included examples. I wonder where all that is now. The Coronation Dress was on display in the State apartments this summer. It is embroidered almost all over with crystals and pearls, gold and silk threads. No lace, but fabulous non the less. They just don't make them like that any more, and I cannot really see anything like it ever being made again. It was while I was on the tour of the State apartments that I saw a painting of Queen Victoria in her coronation robes, which appeared to include Honiton lace which started me on the chase to find out what it was and where it is now. It seems it was part of the coronation regalia, the colobium sindonis. Apparently she put her foot through it as she was posing for the portrait painting. It was photographed in 1894, but has disappeared since her death.
