This made me think of when I first learnt to make lace.  Not being held back by any 
fear I was going full guns at it.

I was engaged and due to married shortly (before you ask it didn't happen in the end 
for which I will be eternally thankful) ... sorry, digression .... anyway I was due to 
get married and one of the ladies at my lace group suggested that I should make a 
honiton lace bee to sew into the petticotes of my dress as a symbol of being a 
lacemaker.  

My dear teacher turned round and said - 'oh no, it would take her years to learn to 
make honiton lace - no point'

(now you can see why we parted company)

I left the lace tutor group shortly after and made my first piece of honiton only a 
few months later.

Still not married, and still no bee.
