No - it's a special tool made especially for lacemakers. Mine is a yellow plastic handle with a metal hook which has a slight bend in the working end which makes getting into those footside holes much easier. The "hook" is actually more like a tiny shepherd's crook and is a bit deeper than a hook, so you don't lose that thread once you've "hooked" it. My hook also has a grey plastic cap to cover the hook when not being used, and when put on the back side of the handle while working it adds to the size of the handle. I think most vendors carry it now, and it isn't expensive. Vendors call it the 'Sewing Hook" or the "Sewing in Hook", and Lacy Susan (www.lacysusan.com) carries it for $3.95; Holly also has it (www.vansciverbobbinlace.com) but her price is $7.50.
