A tip I was also given was that when you have finished winding the thread and have half hitched it, you hold the bobbin up, in the air, by the thread and let it spin until any extra twisting has be 'spun' out. On cotton, there is very little extra twist be to spun out, but on silks and metalised threads then there are some times problems.
