Dear Lacemakers, You have not been reading many postings from Lori, our Lace Fairy, because she is very busy these days. However, her web site is still available and being updated for your research and enjoyment.
We ran an errand to a framing shop in Lewiston, Maine, yesterday -- to pick up a lace-related painting, as a matter of fact. This is a mill city on the Androscoggin River. Years ago, the many brick mills were powered by the falls on the river. Now, the mills are being converted for modern uses. One of the largest businesses there was Bates Mills. They wove many textile items, but the most famous were bedspreads, and there is a store in one mill that still sells their products. The restaurant (in a connected mill) was new to me, but recommended by Lori. It was very busy, and we were escorted to the very back of the dining room. She looked startled when I asked if she had ever been seated at a table "in this secluded section". "No", she replied. I pointed to the wall above our table. Stenciled in large letters, was an old sign for the the weavers: "Please pick up dropped bobbins". We had a good chuckle, a good lunch, and lots of "lace talk". Now, the question is whether I should go back to area antique shops, looking for an old bobbins sign!
