Just thought I'd mention that whatever they're called, I couldn't find any mention of any crochet thread finer than size 30 on either the UK *or* the North American Coats website so apparently the original post is right and size 40 is no longer made.
I think DMC still makes the size 40, though maybe it would be suitable.
