The larger the number, the smaller the hook. In a catalog I have on hand, it lists #15 as 0.50mm, and #16 as 0.40mm. It doesn't list #14 but it would be a bit larger than #15. In my crochet hook pile, a #14 said .90, and a #12 said 1.0 mm. The #12 would be for medium thread, the #14 for medium fine thread, and the 15-16 for fine thread. You can get a #12 in a hobby store, but the finer hooks are only available from lace suppliers. You need a hook that can catch the whole thread in the hook rather than just part of the thread. Too small a hook will shred the thread, and too large won't go through the pinhole. Perhaps someone has a chart listing which size threads go with each size hook-----????????
