Sandy, I'd second this. I'm a beginner too (I started lacemaking this summer), and this book was recommended to me a couple of months ago. I've found it invaluable when trying to work out what thread to use for a pattern, if I don't have the one specified. The booklet also has a very useful introduction to threads, eg their thickness and composition, how the different materials behave (silk, linen, cotton etc) and so on. Well worth the money!
