Here are bobbins for sale on ebay in a shape that I've not come across
before. Any suggestions on the region they might come from or what type of
lace they'd be used for? Or are they lacemaking bobbins at all? They're on
ebay UK, and the seller will only post to the UK.
Those aren't lace bobbins, they're Gobelin-style tapestry bobbins. The long smooth point enables the weaver to manoeuvre the bobbin through the warp threads of a tapestry loom.
If you google "weaving tapestry bobbins" you will find any number of sites that show these bobbins. I did, and found
http://www.shannocklooms.com/bobbins.htm
which is interesting because it also shows the Aubusson style bobbin, which I believe also shows up on eBay as a lace bobbin, from time to time.
