Poole Bobbin Lace Circle had a talk a few months ago from one of the Queen's
dressmakers. She said that lace used today on the Queen's clothes (outerwear
not underwear so we're talking dress material width) is machine made, bought
from outside the UK and costs hundreds of pounds a yard. Where it's bought
from or what type of lace, I don't know, but I didn't get the impression
that each piece is made specially, rather that it's chosen from samples.
No-one thought to ask why it's so expensive.
