I know I desperately need to get some books to help, but I did n't have anything but a single handout to go from. I was doing a piece with 2 different colors where I wanted one side to be one color, and the rest to be a different color. I didn't have a clue how to do this, so I just played around with the bobbins and adding different crosses and twists until i got the look I wanted, and just did the same thing for the whole length. In the end, it looked just how I had wanted it to look. Which for me, means at this stage it is right :) I don't have a clue if I did things the right or wrong was for the part I had to make up, but it worked.
The messages about making new patterns from mistakes really made me think of this. People had to create patterns and new techniques at some point and necessity is the mother of invention they say. If we do something and it is different from how it is traditionally done, then it's just a new creation the way I see it. I'm just working on simple things and I'm sure working on more complicated pieces and patterns it becomes MUCH more vital to follow precise instructions but when you CAN be creative and just try new things, seems like it could only be a good thing. If you don't like it, just take it out and don't do the same thing again.
The piece I just finished was given away as a gift, which I am profoundly thankful for. I can't imagine that in years to come I will want to look at it and go " Oh my GOSH!!! Look at what i did!" and cringe. It was fun though and I enjoyed it, even if it was a bit nerve wracking trying out so many new things all on my own at first :)
