The discussions about when is a "difference" a mistake reminds me of an evening at the start of a new term when I arrived at class to find that, in addition to expected students, I had a new one who had signed on that very evening. And she was Japanese with no English.
I had a spare set of equipment, and a beginners pricking, and I can mime fairly well, but as you can imagine progress was a little slower with no chance of explaining any "whys". By the end of the evening she was doing well, could wind and hitch bobbins and was steaming along with cloth stitch. Right at the end of the lesson, as the bell went and the caretaker hovered in the corridor, I showed her half stitch. Big smile, much nodding, and off she went. Next week she proudly uncovered her work. Beautifully worked, but she could see from the surprise on my face it was not what I had been expecting. She has worked all the left to right rows in half stitch, as I had showed her, and all the right to left ones in cloth stitch. It was different but I can't think of it as wrong - just a sort of Japanese three-quarter stitch.
