I would say don't confuse the general public with what 'cross' and 'twist'
mean to us.

twisting the threads together while the pins hold the *shape* of the
pattern"?"

A more accurate, though broad definition: Bobbin lace is an off-loom
weaving technique; each thread is attached to a bobbin. Pins are employed
to maintain the structure of the fabric.

This is a sparse definition at best, without an illustration (how are the
pins used?) - but it isn't misleading, unlike the dictionaries :(
