Pat
I once planned a torchon shawl using a knitting worsted weight silk. I
found it worked out if I took a pattern intended for 40/2 or 35/2 linen and
enlarged it to 200% of its original size. I choose silk instead of wool
because it had less stretch.

The only problem is in making modified equipment large enough to handle the
pattern and threads. I made bobbins 6 inches long. Some were dowels and
wooden beads, some were turned out of 3/4 inch stock. Ordinary bobbins
don't have enough storage space for such thick yarn. Although some large
Bruges bobbins are available on the internet (try Lacemaking circle). I
used a sawdust stuffed bolster 8 inches in diameter and about 16 inches
wide.

To get a design just make strips of any insertion pattern or patterns that
you like and sew the strips together. Before you start decide if you want
self fringe (means no hanging on in pairs) or some kind of bobbin made
binding along the edges.
