Tamara, The Cluny tallies are long thin ones, Maltese tallies are shorter fat ones, and Wheatear is the word you were looking for - used in Bedfordshire lace. Wheatear tallies are pointed at both ends, barleycorn tallies, are long tallies but square at the ends, which most of the old Beds lacemakers made, and a "true" wheatear, started from one pair left out at 2 consecutive pinholes, and joined together at the top of the tally with a cloth st, pin, cloth stitch. This gives the look of the whiskers at the top of the wheatear. Though I think my Grandmother called the whole spray of tallies a wheatear.
Leadworks are the Honiton name for tallies, which are usually (?always)square ended. from Liz in Melbourne, Oz, [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
