Hello Jo and lace list I think it's safe to say that overall we don't attach any meaning to the spangles, they are for weight only (and of course we like them to look nice). Individual lacemakers might have a particular bead or button for luck. Having a black button on your lace pillow is a good omen, according to an English lacemaker I met - which might have been a regional superstition from some time ago.
