Following on from what Tamara has said about interpretation, I also understand that if a design is used in another context, eg an edging turning into a square mat, or a square mat into a curve for a fan, then that's adaptation, which should also have the courtesy of an acknowledgement of the original designer. Changing the thread, the size of the finished piece, the colours, the stitches, etc in an element would be classed as interpretation.
