Dear Lacemakers,

On a most busy day here in my studio, the new V & A book by Clare Browne
"Lace from the Victoria and Albert Museum" ISBN 0-8109-6623-9 arrived. It was
ordered in December and promised for delivery in May. This being April 22nd, I'd
say that is very good delivery time from the U.K.!

The U.S. distributor is Harry N. Abrams, if your bookstore is not able to
look it up. The book jacket price is $45; I paid 20% less, or $36. There are
100 picture Plates listed, but in many instances there is more than one view of
a lace assigned to a Plate number - so more than 100 pictures. The extra
views are wonderful enlargements, showing details you may not have seen before
(even if you've seen a picture of the lace elsewhere). Some of the Plates are in
color! Lots of figural laces, which are so enjoyable. The paper stock
guarantees clarity, and every picture is in focus (or, so it seems to me after
hasty examination).

To those who have lace friends who do not read English: This would be a nice
gift book.

There are 12 pages of text, which I must admit to not having read - yet.
Total book is 144 pages, hardbound. I cannot help but compare the $36 I paid for
this quality book - to the more expensive spiral paperbound lace books that
sometimes come my way. This book has lasting value, and anyone who scans
through it will realize that most of the laces are truly works of art. (They make
you forget to breathe.)

It is possible you can buy the book on Amazon or at a large bookstore chain,
but for pure service I will always be grateful to the owner of the small
bookstore in our town who maintains an excellent relationship with distributors of
books. She anticipates my needs and scrambles to get books into my eager
hands just as soon as packages arrive in her shop. No waiting until the next
day. If there is such a store near you, it may be worth your while to develop a
cordial customer relationship with the shop owner. So many small stores have
been driven out of busines by giant book distributors. They can afford to
give you a discount and still make a profit -- money that circulates in your
community.

No dessert needed tonight,
