Hi everyone The topic of Mayflower got chatty on lace and lacey on chat <vbg>
Brenda wrote (to chat) a lace reference to the Mayflower that I was hoping to work into a topic on lace - and here it is: > Yes, 'gathering nuts in May' is a corruption of 'gathering knots of > May' - stems of hawthorn in full bloom; masses of it around in the > hedgerows of England at this time of year. The flowers are small and > white. The point ground filling probably got it's name from the > resemblance; though the flowers have five petals and the patches of > cloth stitch in the PG filling are diamond shaped. Similar sort of > size. You see it was the beginning of May, and a correspondent had pointed out some little customs, such as giving each other lilies-of-the-valley (muguets, yes?) which got me thinking about flowers in May...Mayflowers...and 'the Mayflower' however way that is designated..and yes amongst the musings why the Mayflower 'stitch' in bobbin lace is so named, and as such must be important (the Mayflower) culturally to that bobbin lace's origin in England. But first I asked lace-chat about 'Mayflower' and its broader references. It was nice to Ask Google, nicer still to Ask Lace-chat ;) bye for now Bev in Sooke, BC (west coast of Canada) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
