I hope this is not too late to tell of the lovely weekend we had in Sarborough for the Lace Guild Convention. I did not return home until the Monday, and then had to pack up on Tuesday for a Whitework embroidery talk on Wednesday for the Tamworth Embroiderers' Guild, not returning till Thursday. Since I returned the heavens have opened and we have had torrential rain, but the four days in Scarborough were wonderful, sunshine, the sea-side, good company, lots of lace, a series of lectures, displays and classes.
What more can anyone want? I do not go to the Convention every year as it co-incides with the Embroiderers' Guild AGm weekend. My lace friend Pauline persuaded me that this year I should accompany her to Scarborough, in Yorkshire. She has always enjoyed it on previous occasions. I had not been there for about thirty years when my children were small and we went to the cinema to see Mary Poppins as it was raining. Pauline booked us into the same Hotel she had stayed before and I managed to get cheaper rail-tickets by booking on two separate trains, not easy. We arrived late afternoon and walked down to the Spa Complex where the Convention was to take place. This is a very impressive building right on the shore-line at the base of the cliffs. We were there again early next morning to set up stalls and displays. Pauline is a Voluntary Curtor of the Lace Guild and was helping to set up the display called "Party-time" showing items from the Lace Guild Collection. I had arranged to sell some of the Romanian Point Lace for George Butters in aid of the Romanian Lace Group. He imports their lace and Pauline and I help sell it for him. We love selling things, whoever it is for! I also had copies of my Romanian Point Lace book and did very well, showing interested people how to make the crochet braid. By late morning the sea-shore called to me so I could not resist a walk along the sands when the tide was out, The last time I was on a beach was in hot Mexico, but this was just as good, sunshine, sand and water. The venue was open to members at lunch time. I had put my name down to attend a class on Lucet Braiding. At first I did not get on very well, as my mind was still fixed on the Romanian lace, but once started, I was happy and took off. I still think it is easier to crochet. More tomorrow.
