It looks like the corner is mirrored. I think "gathered" may be what you mean by "pulled together", and no, it is not gathered.
I have discovered that I also have the diagram and pricking for the straight lace. The corner of the lace is mirrored on the diagonal which includes the large linen-stitch leaf-like motif on the base of the heart. The effect when it meets another "leaf" in the corner is much like a butterfly! Beautiful!
