No, you do not need a person who is the "I". The *viewer* can be the "I".
And, yes, a sign "To St Ives" needs to be in the first section, pointing to the far end. And there could be a sign at the end that just says "St Ives" if part of the village is shown The people would mostly be facing the "TO". sign, except for a wife who stopped to pick up a lost sack and is turned around while picking it up.
