I have received a question from a woman in New York regarding advice given
about framing her lace. She has a piece of lace that belonged to and may even
have been made by her grandmother. When she visited Brugge she received the
following advice.

"The folks in Brugge recommended that once the mounting board is in the
picture frame, that I not cover the back of the frame with paper or other backing
as is customarily done to protect the piece from dust and insects. They said
that the lace needs to be exposed to air to keep it from drying out. What do
you recommend? Our weather conditions are so different from Northern Europe,
and the piece will be in my non air conditioned home, that I wonder if this
recommendation is appropriate for the US. The framer will follow my
recommendation but is uncomfortable with not covering the back for the above reasons.
The
lace is being mounted on fabric covered conservation quality matting board."

Does anyone have an opinion or information about this that I could relay to
her?
