Horsehair pillows are round, mushroom shaped pillows stuffed with horsehair.
There used to be a gentleman in Victoria, Australia, who made them. As my daughter was in first year at Univesity studying to be a veterinary surgeon, she was interested in the process by which the horsehair might be treated for use in a pillow, so I asked. I was told the horsehair is washed, curled and sterilised before use - as the seat padding in Mercedes Benz cars! Presumably the pillow maker had found a source of supply of the seat padding. I also presume that the stuff was curled before use to ensure it held together, whereas straight lengths of horsehair could go lumpy. He actually sent me a sample of the stuff to show me what it was like. Horsehair pillows aren't as heavy as straw, but not as light as any of the foams. They hold their shape well, and are quite good to work on...definitely no hard, lumpy bits. Ruth Budge (Sydney, Australia, the proud owner of two horsehair pillows).
