I haven't flown with my travel pillow in aeons - but I think the last time I did was during the Gulf War, from Melbourne to Denver. Interestingly, it was when I went through handluggage screening where the x-ray machines were run by women, that I had to open up my pillow and explain what it was. They were fine with it, but times have changed.
I have taken it on a couple of road trips, but have found as I've gotten older, that I can no longer read or do handwork in the car as I get very motion sick (can't even read a map in town). But I do like to take it along to work on, when I get where I'm going. My travel pillow is a similar design, only the flaps aren't quite as big (made it in a class with Margaret Tainton in about January of 1989 - and had the best weekend class with her). It sits very comfortably on my lap, so is great on aircraft or when I've been out and in need of something to keep my fingers busy (I don't always have a pocket to keep my tatting in, Noelene :-) ). I use my regular bobbins (east midlands), and I think I've squeezed 25-30 pairs on it, but 15-20 is more comfortable to work with. I did make a 2nd roller, so that when I did a class with Barbara Underwood, I had a roller for my class piece. Not the preferred method for a piece of beds lace, but since I was traveling from Oz, and had limited space for a pillow, I made do (it turned out to be an awful pattern to work anyway, so I think 2 repeats was all that was made). Sorry I can't help you more with current conditions.
