Just start with the threads long for a fringe at the top, work only 2-3-4 repeats of a bookmark, and plait a long tail with the rest of the threads -- 6 to 10 inches. if you have that much thread. Using two threads, wrap and tie the end of the tail.
Turn pillow around and make the fringe on the top. Trim fringe and tail. Use with the fringe down, and the 'tail' hanging out the top of the book.


Some threads can give out in the plait and no one will notice.
