One of my colleagues has a theory, based on the (apparent) fact that people have set out to climb Ayers Rock, never to be seen again. She thinks that all the things we lose are in some deep, dark place in Ayers Rock, being looked after by those who have got lost themselves. Should we humour her, or decide to have her confined to a quiet room for a rest?
