Dear Spiders,

A couple of days ago, one of our English Arachne members
wrote to me for advice. I'll not put her on the spot by
identifying her, but I think that her situation needs to be
known. She told me that an American woman had contacted her
and had told her she was a lacemaker. I believe she
contacted her through email, but am not sure. At any rate,
she told our friend that she was in England to be married to
a man there whom she had met on the internet. They had had
a disagreement, and she asked if she could come to stay at
our friend's house until she left for the U.S. She had told
our friend that she was a member of IOLI, and our friend had
given her contact information for local lace groups, which
the woman never followed up on. In fact, although she had
come to England to get married, she had not brought a lace
pillow! I checked for her name in the current IOLI
directory, and she does not appear there. While not all of
Arachne membership is active, I have never seen her name on
the list. I cautioned our friend not to invite her into her
home, as there were too many inconsistencies in the woman's
story, and I was concerned that she might be victimized.

I write this to let others in England know that this has
happened and to be cautious about total strangers who
approach you asking for favors based on lace. It's a sad
thing when we have to be so cautious, but I don't want any
of you to be taken advantage of...
