Naalbinding is not an embroidery stitch. It is an ancient looping technique (no backing fabric is used; the needle and yarn form the fabric) used for making fabric for mittens, socks, etc. When you find out how labour-intensive it is, you will understand why most naalbinding objects are small! There are quite a few naalbinding sites on the Web. I don't have my bookmarks handy because I'm off-line but a Google search on naalbinding and nalbinding will turn up most of them. These days members of the Society for Creative Anachronism seem to be the biggest naalbinding enthusiasts. They say that it's rather difficult to learn from a printed text or pictures, and I have to agree. I've downloaded in the past several pages of instructions on naalbinding and I still have trouble getting past the first row.
Best wishes, Avital ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Ligeti" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have been asked, by a lovely lady, who is always so very generous with her help and advice on lacemaking, if I could find out about an old embroidery stitch from Norway. It is called Naalbinding, and has come down though the centuries from the Bronze Age, I believe. Is there a Scandinavian Spider, or anyone else out there, who can help with any instructions, or other information, please.
